Scoring change

From the Falmouth Packet, first published Wednesday 12th Jul 2006.

BADMINTON England has announced that the International Badminton Federation (IBF), at its AGM, in Tokyo ratified the introduction of a new scoring system. This is to the effect that matches, in all five disciplines of play, will now comprise the best of three games, to 21 points, writes John Tresidder.

Under the new system game is won by the first player, or pair, to reach 21 points (if the score is 20-20 then a player, or pair, needs two clear points to win a game.

However, at 29-29 the first player to reach 30 points wins the game (30-29). The first player/pair to win two games wins the match.

However, confirmation is awaited from Badminton England that the new scoring system be adopted for all levels of badminton play, including Inter-County Championship (ICC) and league, as well as "open" events in this country.

Planning is well advanced for the Duchy of Cornwall 24th "Open" Badminton Championships, which has a prize-fund of £1,185.

The event is scheduled for Carn Brea Leisure Centre, Pool, Redruth,on Saturday and Sunday, September 16.
