People power victory

From the Chard & Ilminster News, first published Wednesday 12th Jul 2006.

PEOPLE power has triumphed over a controversial planning application in Tatworth.

The application for two four-bedroom houses and four three-bedroom houses on land between Waterlake Road and Manor Farm Close generated an incredible number of objection letters from residents, and the applicants have since withdrawn their plans.

Residents of Tatworth came together in opposition of the scheme and lobbied the district council, writing a total of 75 letters of objection.

They said that the development was not in keeping with the surrounding listed buildings, and felt that as it was the oldest part of Tatworth it should be treated sensitively.

Although the application had received outline planning permission from South Somerset District Council, residents were concerned that the development would have a detrimental impact on the village.

A letter to the residents of Tatworth from Ian Purdon, of Manor Farm Close, and Ken Edginton, of Tatworth Street, said: "The support for us and the parish council has been fantastic - democracy has worked so far.

"The site will still be developed in the future, but hopefully the planning department will be in consultation with interested parties, including village residents."

Mr Purdon told the News: "The area is going to be developed but we hope with something in keeping and perhaps a few less dwellings.

"We are pleased with the result and hope that planners will consult the parish council and the residents in the future with new plans."

Agent Paul Rowe was unavailable for comment as the News went to press on Tuesday.
